Exercise 16: Rewrite the text to create conditional sentences using Type 3. Once, there was a destitute family residing in a small house. On a certain day, the children were starving, prompting the mother to pay a visit to the market. While on her way, she came across a bridge and noticed an object in the river. Leaning over the bridge, her purse unintentionally fell into the water, sinking to the riverbed beyond her reach. Coincidentally, a fish happened to swim by and swallowed it. Lacking funds, she returned home. With no food available, she resorted to fishing. Fortunately, she managed to catch a large fish, which she intended to cook. However, upon cutting open the fish, she was astonished to find her purse.

Conditionals Type 3 are used to refer to hypothetical situations in the past that did not happen. We use the past perfect (had + past participle) in the if clause and the perfect conditional (would have + past participle) in the main clause. Now let"s rewrite the text using Type 3 conditional sentences:
"If the destitute family had not resided in a small house, they would not have experienced such hardships."
"If the children had not been starving, the mother would not have felt compelled to go to the market."
"Had the mother not come across a bridge on her way, she would not have had the mishap with her purse."
"If her purse had not unintentionally fallen into the water, it would not have sunk to the riverbed."
"If the fish had not swum by coincidentally, it would not have swallowed her purse."
"If the mother had had enough funds, she would not have returned home empty-handed."
"Had there been food available, the mother would not have resorted to fishing."
"If she hadn"t managed to catch any fish, they would have faced severe hunger."
By rewriting the text using Type 3 conditional sentences, we can see how different outcomes could have occurred if certain conditions had been different in the past.
