His father was a renowned inventor of "visible speech", which aided deaf individuals in pronouncing words they couldn"t hear. Between 1868 and 1870, he collaborated with his father, studying speech and teaching deaf children in Edinburgh. In 1866, he began contemplating the transmission of tones through telegraphy, and it was at that moment that the concept of the "harmonic telegraph" occurred to him, which would allow for the electrical transmission of musical tones from one location to another.
